Research as a pre-law student

Research isn't required for law school, but it builds what admissions reads for: careful writing and a professor who knows your work.
Honors in the Social SciencesA thesis on bail, sentencing or voting rights gives you a writing sample and a close mentor. 3.3 GPA to start.
Methods coursesPSCI 200 and an intro statistics course, such as PSYCH 107 or DATA 205, teach you to read the empirical studies courts and advocates cite.
Faculty research workEmail a professor whose work on courts, policing, immigration or rights interests you, and offer a set number of hours a week.
Data work at legal organizationsSome defender offices, DA offices and legal aid groups take interns who clean data and summarize case records.
Present itThe Borough of Queens Undergraduate Research Symposium takes projects from every field each spring.
Split between law and a PhD?Research serves both. See the graduate school path for PhD programs.
