Building a network

Many jobs and internships come through people you know, and you're in New York City, which has more networking events than you could ever go to.
- Ask your professors. Tell them the field you're curious about, and ask whether they know anyone you could talk to.
- Use the career center. The Center for Career Engagement and Internships runs workshops and events and a career and internship fair where employers recruit.
- Go to events. Look for talks, panels and mixers at CUNY, nonprofits, think tanks and city agencies; many are free. Introduce yourself, ask one good question, and follow up by email.
